Herping Trips

Over the spring and summer of 2011 LHS plans to go out and do several herping trips to local areas of the state. These trips may be from half day to full days trips and will be great opertunities for anyone who likes reptiles and amphibians.

If you are interested in joining us for one of these trips you can check back here for the dates or contact us at LancHerpSociety@gmail.com.

All will be welcomed. Cameras are encouraged to "capture" the experience. Also sturdy shoes and jeans are recommended for any who join us since trips can cover rocky and hilly terrain.

Recent Events

Bronx Zoo - April 16th

In a joint event with our sister organization the Metropolitan Herpetological Society we went to the Bronx Zoo.

This is just part of the cooperation bewteen LHS and MHS, which started with Harvey Bird (President - MHS) giving a talk on a herping trip to Florida and will continue with the two clubs bringing up Bill Love to speak at LHS in May 2011.

Snake Photo Booth, That Fish Place - April 16-17

Every year we have a photo booth for That Fish Place anniversary sale. This year was not any different. Many people came and visited us and got their picture taken with a large boa constrictor. The photo booth was a great fundraising success for future speakers.

Vernal Walks - Spring 2011

On a couple of days in March members of LHS led vernal pond walks at both Clarence Schock Memorial Park at Governor Dick and King's Gap. They had limited success due to a nasty turn in the weather, it getting both dry and cold again. However there were numerous egg masses from wood frogs and spotted salamanders to be found. The walks were also a great introduction for many people to vernal pools and the abundance of life that can be found in these small pockets of wetlands.

Also during the early part of the year LHS members took, friends, family and neighbors out on those rainy nights when the spotted salamanders and wood frogs started to move. At these times the herps were seen in the hundreds it was a great experience, although wet one.

Reptile Weekend - March 2011

On March 13, 2011 we provided a table at the North Museum for their annual Reptile Weekend. We had reticulated python there for people to meet and pet. Along with providing information about herps and sharing experiences with interested people.

We also set-up a "Draw a Turtle" activity for the kids that was there for the entire weekend. This was a big hit for the kids from 3 years to 83 years, as parents got involved with drawing their own turtle next to kids.
